HAIR LOSS INFORMATION
What is Trichology?
Trichology is the para-medical science of the hair, hair loss and associated scalp problems. It encompasses the study of the diseases of the human hair and scalp, as well as the assessment of the cause(s) and treatment of the disorders.
What does a Trichologist Do?
A trichologist is a hair and scalp specialist. Trained in life science, they look at hair loss problems in a holistic way by evaluating clients on the basis of personal history, lifestyle, genetic factors and environment conditions. Based on this information, a trichologist is able to suggest individual
treatments, give nutritional advice and recommend lifestyle changes to improve the health and appearance of the hair and scalp.
When should I contact a Trichologist?
If you are experiencing any of the following: sudden bald spot, excessive shedding, overall thinning, excessive oiliness or dryness, breakage after a chemical service, or persistent itching/burning of the scalp.
What Causes Hair Loss?
Depending on the type of hair loss you may be suffering from, which is detailed elsewhere on this page, there a many factors that can trigger its onset. Certain types of illnesses can be major contributing factor, as can any kind of surgery which for the most part will involve the use of a general anesthetic, this type of loss is generally thought to be stress-related, and is caused by an internal reaction in the body. Hair loss may also have some connection with the body’s hormones, naturally occurring chemicals become unbalanced with the rest of the body and create unwanted side effects on other parts of the body. An overactive thyroid gland may also cause hair loss in some people, in addition a underactive one can have the same effect. The thyroid gland is to be found in the neck, this gland also produces it’s own hormones for regulation of body functions, such as metabolism and more importantly in this case growth rates, and function speed of bodily systems, and the control of the body’s sensitivity to other hormones. Hair loss in woman, several months after giving birth is also very common and is once more caused by hormone levels that fluctuate quite a lot after the baby is born. There are various types of medications that may also be the cause of excessive hair loss, such medicines such as those used for treating heart disease and high blood pressure, those used for thinning blood, contraceptive pills, and anti-depressants can all have an effect on the hair, fortunately in most cases the hair will regrow when the medications are stopped. In more serious cases hair loss may be attributed to some other medical condition, that has not yet been noticed or diagnosed such as Lupus erythematosus or diabetes, both of these conditions have mild and serious forms. As mentioned earlier children may also be affected by some form of hair loss, in many cases this may be a scalp infection, this is not serious and may be treated with proprietary treatments.
